I guess that's both a good and a bad thing. I'm finding it hard to walk the line between being patient for what God has in store for me in the future, being content where I am, and worrying about waking up in five years finding myself exactly where I am now.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I still love catching all the local shows around town. A friend came in and wanted to see some live music so I took him to one of my favorite places, not knowing who was playing. It ended up being a guitarist from the Allman Brothers who is lengendary in the guitarist circles. Looking through the credits of the new Passion album, I noticed people that I know and get to hear every week at a ministry that is busting loose. Can a life be routine and exciting at the same time?

I'm still getting studio sessions whenever I can, I did one about three weeks ago that went really well, so well they were asking for business cards to pass around to their friends. For those who don't realize how incredibly hard it is to break into a town like Nashville, that's huge. When you ask a producer/engineer their story, it always seems to start with "Well, I used to clean a studio and got sessions on my spare time....".

Finally saw "August Rush" last night. The acoustic instrumentals was incredibly catchy. As far as the movie, I thought they tried to pack too much story into too little time which resulted in holes throughout the movie, but overall I enjoyed it.

Well, catch you in three months...

Thursday, December 06, 2007

Well, I am officially a victim of home invasion. That's right, a week ago I came home from work to find my door kicked in, my place wrecked, and some things stolen. My cell phone was one of those things so sorry if you've tried to call me. They only really got small things (cell phone, credit cards I don't carry on me, some speakers and some movies). The most frustrating part was sitting in Nashville rush hour traffic (that would test anybody's patience anytime) trying to find a friend that was home so I can use their phone to cancel credit cards that were stolen. After I made all the immediate calls I needed to make I went to Walmart to get a cheap prepaid phone, brought it home (my door couldn't be fixed til the next day) and started to plug it in for the battery to charge and SURPRISE, there's no battery for the phone to work. Then the next day my computer crashed and I spent two days reinstalling software. Most, if not all, of you who read this are close friends who will forgive my rudeness when I say that the past week has felt like the world has used my scrotum as a speed bag.

HOWEVER

some things I need to remember:

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" (it's true, but if somebody says it I'll punch them in the throat)

"I have learned to be content in all things"-Paul' letter to the Phillipians (IN all things not FOR all things)

"The Lord gives, the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord"-Job

"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago"-David's Psalm

"I am with you always, even the the ends of the age"-Jesus

One of my friends just landed the gig of a lifetime and while I'm thrilled I have to say that there was just a twinge of jealousy mixed with it. I have to remember that it takes time to achieve what you want.

I went to a Derek Webb/Sandra McCracken show last night and was amazed. I know it's one of his older songs but I think "King and a Kingdom" needs to be sung in every church on their 4th of July service: "My first allegiance is not to a flag or a country...it's to a King and a Kingdom", I got goosebumps several times throughout the show

Monday, October 29, 2007

I purchase two albums today; the new David Crowder album and one so unique I just had to get it. The soul searching sweetheart of bluegrass Alison Krauss has teamed up w/ the man whose voice defined rock and roll for over a decade, Robert Plant. It's incredibly rootsy and raw, almost like you're listening to a remastered recording from the 30's or 40's. The Crowder album is good, though it's almost an extension of "A Collision", the unreleased songs if you will.

I've been in an interesting conversation and would love some opinion: what is our role in evangelism?

And now for Mr. Billy Joel to sing about a New York state of mind...

Friday, September 28, 2007

Well the season premier of The Office did not disappoint, my favorite line: "I hit Meredith with my car, I owe it to her to finish this G D 5 K." And I think I have a new favorite show. Chuck is like a witty version of Alias, if you didn't catch the premier you can probably watch it online, I highly recommend it.

Anybody want to come to Nashville and record an album? In music, Hendrix didn't get a lot of recognition til he played the Isle of Wight concert in England. All the first british rockers like Clapton, Beck, the Stones, we're all heavily influenced by american bluesman like T Bone Walker and Muddy Waters. In the world of TV there's a british or american counterpart for almost everything. The Office is a great example. But I have found something I think we can all enjoy. That's right, the british version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's called Hex, it doesn't have the witty humor of Buffy and it's a lot slower paced, but a hot girl with a british accent vanquishing evil-c'mon, I think we can all get behind that.

Wednesday, August 01, 2007

I'm realizing more and more that life, in most areas, is a series of steps. Most of the time it is steps forward, sometimes backward and that's not always a bad thing. I guess relationally the biggest step is who and when to marry. Religiously it is a set of ideas or a person or both you decide you will devote your life to. Probably the biggest series of steps, both forwards and backwards is in your professional life. That's what I've been faced with the past couple of months and why I haven't really posted a lot of what is going on in my life. The pursuit of music for me has hit a stall, while not completely stopped it has certainly slowed to a crawl (yeah I just rhymed). I'm still working part time at Hilltop Studio, which has been a great experience, but I've also started a new job with a company called Manheim Logistics, which handles auto auctions (no I'm not an auctioneer). Though not at all in the music field (we don't even have a radio in the office) I'm okay with that for now. I'm working with great people and I'm getting a paycheck that allows me to pay rent which in turn allows me to stay in Nashville to pursue what I love. So I guess this is a step backwards in order for me to step forward later. While I certainly echo the posts I've been reading lately about how much we miss college, I'm also thrilled to read about the steps we've all been taking since we graduated. Hopefully our steps will lead us all together soon.

Thursday, July 19, 2007

Last night at church the band sang the Charlie Hall song "Closer", an amazing song. During set up and practice there was a woman there with her daughter who was maybe 6 or 7. While the band played she started to dance. Not the dance of a child trying to practice her ballet lessons but of a child completely enjoying the moment and though nobody noticed it was so...beautiful. I instantly thought of when Jesus told his disciples not to hinder the children from coming to him and chose to describe the Kingdom using children. Who sold us the lie that following Christ is for the reserved and intellectuals and that unencumbered is the same as irreverant? Better yet why were we buying?

Life has been giving me a pretty good beating lately. I wonder if that's what happens. We didn't really buy a lie so much as we lose our innocence. We look longer at credit card bills than we do sunsets and climb the corporate ladder instead of trees. My life has been so consumed with the worries of tomorrow that I so easily forget the simplest things Jesus tells me. "Don't worry about tomorrow, it will take care of itself." "Look at the birds, not one of them falls that the Father does not know...how much more valuable are you than they?"

I know what Jesus says, and what Job said, "The Lord gives and takes away, blessed is the name of the Lord." I know the desert is supposed to make us stronger. I know His plans are better. I know everything works together for the good of those that love Him. I have all the right answers but if I can be honest for a moment: sometimes (many times) I also don't care. There are days when I completely get when Thoreau talked of "leading a life of quiet desperation" and instead of the quiet I want to scream until the rasp in my voice echoes that of my life. Maybe if I can come to Him like a child again, if I can look out to a hurting world instead of in to myself, if I can enjoy...just Him.

I don't know when this desert will end. I don't know if you have just been through one or are going through one right now. I do know they come and go. And I know it's nice to find the beauty of Jesus in the dance of a child.
